What Is a Coffee Compass?
A coffee compass is a tool that helps you to map out the different tastes that you might encounter in a coffee brew. It is easy to use and can help you to check the balance of different flavors in your bean to brew ratio.
This can affect the taste of your coffee, so it is important to get it exactly right. The coffee compass can help you to explore the best way to brew your coffee and find the perfect balance for your own taste.
We have created this coffee compass to help you explore the different tastes that you might encounter in a coffee brew at home. It is easy to use and provides a simple method of balancing your bean to brew ratio for your own taste.
Please remember that the roast quality of the bean is just as important as the bean to brew ratio. Each bean has its own characteristics, so it is important that you choose a coffee that you enjoy and one that suits your taste buds.
Good quality coffee will be easier to create the perfect brew with less effort.
How to Use the Coffee Compass
The coffee compass is a great tool to help you create the perfect coffee for your taste by telling you exactly what to do in two simple steps:
Step 1: Find Where Your Coffee Currently Sits
To use the compass, simply use the map on the left to find where your brew currently sits. Taste your coffee and look at all the different keywords describing the coffee. Find two or three words that describe your coffee, this is now the center of the compass.
Step 2: Get as Close to The Center as Possible
Now our goal is to go get as close to the center of the coffee zone of the coffee compass. Use the handy graphic on the right that tells you exactly what to do with your coffee to get it to the coffee zone.
For example, if your coffee is salty and tastes a bit sour, this means the coffee is under extracted. At the moment, we are on the left side of the compass.
We need to get to the center so we follow the direction of the arrow to the right: extract more and use less coffee. So simple, yet so effective!
You may need to make a few adjustments to get exactly what you’re looking for, but the coffee compass will help you keep things on track. One thing to remember is that this brewing method is not foolproof, but it is a great way to get started with brewing coffee beans!
Is There a Coffee Compass for Espresso?
Sadly the coffee compass above will not work for espresso because the brewing times are so much shorter. Only use the coffee compass on this page for brewing coffee!
We have created a different compass for espresso specifically. It is different and much better suited for espresso. Our espresso coffee compass is a great guide for getting the perfect espresso.
